Noise Cannon: Noise of the Year

Caribou – Our Love

You can dance to it, you can plug-in and chill out to it – you just can’t do without it. Caribou’s latest album Our Love is more than a list of songs, its many layers of genres come through in an abundance of warm synths and airy vocals.

It’s got pop, it’s got soul, and most of all it’s got depth. There is something wonderfully complex about the waves of different genres in this album, but not so much that it distracts you. When listening you think along with the music and hear all these different elements that leave you second guessing those explicit pop tones. ‘Can’t Do Without You’ is one track of many from the album that if you played in a club it’d go down a treat. Take it out of that context, however, and even through its repetition it becomes much more elaborate and this recurs throughout the album. Intricate combinations of R&B and, arguably, hints of drum and bass, Caribou blurs the genre lines to some extent beyond recognition, resulting in an original and established album.
